Sobey excited to become a Poke
The Wyoming basketball coaching staff picked up a commitment from a high-scoring Australian this weekend in hopes of increasing its offensive output. Nathan Sobey pledged to play for the Pokes after his visit and will bring a scorers mentality to Laramie this fall.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Sobey is an Australian native who will come to Laramie by Cochise Junior College in Douglas, Ariz. Last season Sobey said he averaged 17 points per game and six boards.
"I compete," he said when asked his strengths. "I like to play hard and do whatever it takes for our team to win. I think I am athletic and I can score with the ball. I think I play hard and play hard on defense.
"There might be a few dunks for the fans to see."
Sobey he had been recruited by Wyoming Assistant Coach Scott Duncan as well as head coach Larry Shyatt for the past three months and finally got on-campus last week.
"I came out the other week and found it is a college town and everyone likes to be involved," Sobey said. "I liked that everyone follows the school sports. It is exciting. I visited two weeks ago. They took me around the school, we had meetings with the academics, and then we played some pick-up ball and we went bowling, went out for dinner. We didn't do a lot but it was good."
Sobey said he committed yesterday after feeling a connection with the players and coaches in Laramie. He said the Pokes' coaching staff told him they are interested in him playing the small forward position.
"Coach said that he wants me to come in and play a lot," Sobey said. "He wants me to work hard play and win the spotlight first. He said there is a lot of minutes there if you work hard and prove you can play it."
